Shirley Durie, 84, of Godfrey, IL, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025.
Born on October 13, 1940, in Picton, Ontario, Canada, Shirley was the eldest of 13 children and is survived by one loving brother.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Cameron Durie, whom she married on August 14,
1960. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and a deep appreciation for history.
Shirley is survived by her four sons: John Durie of Granite City, IL; Phillip Durie (Tammie Rhoades) of Alton,
IL; Ian Durie (Melissa) of Alton, IL; and Andrew Durie (Lori Jamison) of Godfrey, IL. She was a proud
grandmother to five cherished grandchildren: Kristine Wallace, Nicholas Jamison, Cameron Durie, Kya
Durie, and Amber Durie.
A passionate historian, Shirley was deeply involved with the Alton Historical Society from 1984 to 1999. She
dedicated years to managing and curating the Alton History Museum and serving as librarian for the Alton
Historical Library. Her commitment to preserving the community's rich history left a lasting legacy. Beyond
her historical work, Shirley was active in numerous social clubs and organizations, always bringing warmth,
wisdom, and wit wherever she went.
Shirley loved her family fiercely, had a deep love for travel, and never turned down a good glass of wine. Her
warmth, intelligence, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In accordance with her wishes, Shirley will be cremated.
