Peggy Lou (Wheeler) Doles, age 77, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 2:04 a.m. at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Peggy was born on April 13, 1948, in Alton, Illinois, to Gilbert and Mary (Barnes) Wheeler.
She was a proud graduate of Roxana High School Class of 1966 and went on to work for Owens-Illinois Glass, Target, and later Olin-Winchester, from which she retired in 2013. Peggy was a woman of faith and attended South Roxana Assembly of God. She was known for her kind heart, sassy spirit, and unwavering love for her family. Above all else, Peggy was a devoted mother, a cherished friend, and someone who quietly gave of herself to those she loved. Her warmth, humor, and compassion will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Melissa Doles of Wood River; her sister, Mary Lee (Paul) Schlueter of St. Charles, Missouri; and her sister-in-law, Paula Fraley of Fieldon. She also leaves behind her nieces Michelle Doles, Merideth (Kyle) Foster, and Andrea (Neal) Donohue; her nephew John (Ruby) Doles; great-nieces Caroline and Amelia Foster, Khloe, Baylee, and Ciria Doles; and great-nephews Trenton Doles, John Doles Jr., and Christopher Stanley. Peggy is also survived by her dearest friend, Ruth Ann Oates, her former husband Michael Doles, and many extended family members and friends who will forever hold her memory close.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the friends who made it possible for Peggy to remain at home during the final years of her life: Cassie, Nancy, Chrissie, Audrey, Joanna, Alicia, Bethany, and Kyle. Your kindness and care will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Her funeral service will take place on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, with burial to follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Bethalto.
