Michael James Edel, 84, passed away February 24, 2024 at his home.
Born July 30, 1939 in Breese, IL, he was the so of Melvin and jane (Thompson) Edel.
He earned his Bachelor's Degree at Illinois State University and then a Master's Degree from SIU- E. He began his teaching career in the Beecher, IL School District before moving to teach, coach (basketball and golf) at East Alton -Wood River High School before retiring in 1993. Following that, he turned to his love of coin collecting, which he learned from his father in Centralia, and opened MJ Edel Coins in Wood River. He was an avid golfer who recorded seven, witnessed holes-in-one.
On August 17, 1963 in Shattuc, IL he married Margie K. Stein. She survives.
Surviving also are his children, Michael C. Edel of Wood River, Minna (James) Holloway of Allen, TX, Melissa (Travis) Appelhans of Grand Lake, CO; five grandchildren, Michael T. (Janie) Edel, Lily, Jamie, and Anthony Holloway, Trustin Appelhans; a great granddaughter, Ellie Edel; and sister, Marian (Steve) Dowdy of Wood River.
A Memorial visitation will be held from 10 am until time of service at 11 am, Tuesday, March 12 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
Private interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia.
Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in Wood River, where he was a member.
