Verna "Marie" Sherfy, 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born August 29, 1950 in Wood River, she was the beloved wife of the late David Sherfy, who preceded her in death on March 30, 2020. Marie and David shared a long and devoted marriage, building a life centered on family, faith, and compassion. She was a dedicated mother, and her heart was deeply broken by the loss of her daughter, Kimberly Fowler, in 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents James and Verna (Stone) Gates.
Marie had a gentle soul and a deep love for animals. She spent many years volunteering at local animal rescues, giving her time and energy to care for those who could not speak for themselves. Her kindness touched countless lives both human and animal alike.
She is survived by her loving sister Pat Gates, sons James and Chad, and grandchildren Garrett, Landon, Hannah, Claire, Lilly, and David. Marie was a woman of quiet strength, selflessness, and warmth. She was a devoted sister, wife, mother, and friend, always putting others before herself and offering support with grace and humility.
Visitation will be from 4-6 pm, Thursday, May 29 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
Committal services will be held at 11 am, Friday, May 30 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local animal rescue (she often supported Riverbend Humane Society) in Marie's honor.
