Jeffery Ballard Obituary

Jeffery Dean Ballard, 64, passed away Monday, April 27, 2026 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis, MO.

Born June 25, 1961 in Wood River, IL, he was son of Charles Edward "Eddie" and Thelma Jean "Edgar" Ballard.

He was a graduate of East Alton-Wood River High School in the class of 1979. As a young adult he mastered the skill of welding and worked on river barges for most of his life. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union 482 and enjoyed many years playing and coaching for the Boilermakers’ softball team. He definitely earned his nickname “Sport”. Jeff grew up hunting with his family and friends and enjoyed going out to the duck blind and the field looking for pheasants. You would always catch him listening to his favorite station, KSHE 95, and it was very important to him to always attend the KSHE blood drive and donate. He was always watching the Cardinals or Blues. He was known for being very kind and would do anything for anyone. He was an amazing Dad, brother, boyfriend, son and friend. He was most proud of being “Papa Jeff” to his grandchildren and loved to brag about their accomplishments.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his long time girlfriend, Rebecca Sanders of Wood River; daughter, Genie (Ben) Akers of Glen Carbon; three brothers, Greg (Becky) Ballard of Wood River, Chuck Ballard of East Alton, Tim (Chris) Ballard of Medora; sister, Robin (Steve) Disney of Wood River; two grandchildren, Juliet and Jude Akers; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and his nephew Jacob Ringering.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wood River Moose Lodge June 28, 2026. Open house from 1pm-4pm.

Cremation rites have been accorded.
