Elgin "Sonny" Hinson Obituary

Elgin "Sonny" Hinson, 87, went to be with Lord and his loving wife Sue, Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

Born June 20, 1937 in Alton, he was the son of Elgin Freeman and Naomi Ruth (Dillon) Hinson.

On June 24, 1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River, he married Sue Ellyn Hamm. She died September 18, 2024.

A U.S. Army veteran, he had been a welder for the Olin Corporation before retiring in 1988. Sonny was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed tying flies and telling many stories. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed spending time at their home in Bennett Springs with their family.

Surviving are a son, Kraig (Stephanie) Hinson of East Alton; daughters, Kelli (Jeff) Fletcher, Kristi Hinson (her husband, Robert Pollard) all of East Alton; grandson, Christopher (Megan) Tite; great grandchildren, Claire, Lane, Chloe, and Luke Tite; brother, Charles (Janice) Hinson of Reno, NV; sisters, Beverly Leitner and Nancy Spano both of Wood River; sisters-in-law, Connie (Vince) Vassolo and Karen Hamm; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Howard Hinson, Larry and Janice Hinson; and two brothers-in-law, Pat Hamm and Louie Spano.

Visitation will be from 9 am until time of service at 11 am, Thursday, October 3 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River.

Burial will follow in Woodland Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River where he had been a member for 65 years and served as an elder for over 40 years.
